Written in 1963, "Daddy" is one of Sylvia Path's most popular poems, the most picked-over, and yet the one poem that seems to mean different things to the reader and the author.
When Plath read this poem aloud to a friend, according to several Plath biographies, she read it aloud and the companion "laughed themselves sick" over it. She considered it a show piece, a piece of performance art, and apparently not something to take wholly seriously.
When the poem was released as part of "Ariel" in 1964, the burgeoning feminist movement latched on to it as a powerful force, someone speaking of their own frustration in married life. Scolars have linked the meaning of the poem back to Plath's feelings about her father and husband - just as millions of women now link the poem to feelings of their own about male "Authority" figures.
