About:
A bluestocking is a word used to describe a smart, modern female who enjoys reading and literature and persuit of intellectual subjects. There are modern bluestockings and, historically, the Bluestocking Movement of of the 18th century.
Four Quick Facts About Bluestockings:
- 1: The society first flourished in Britan - it was named after Benjamin Stillingfleet's blue worsted stockings: he was too poor to afford the customary black silk stocking suitable for evening wear.
- 2: Women were often the majority of the guests, and the subject of the evening was often a learned women from the past or the present.
- 3: These upper-middle class women scorned female "accomplishments," card playing, and frivolous behavior, preferring instead a life of moral and intellectual rigor and philanthropic activities.
- 4: Many bluestockings were happily unmarried.
- 5: One of the most fameous bluestockings was Mary Wollonstonecraft, mother of Mary Shelley.
