Autumn In New York


The park was open and leaf-strewn, colors tumbling over one another in a mess of orange and red.

"I think it's a beautiful day." She allowed.

I nodded. "Of course. It stopped raining."

She sighed and tucked her hand into her pocket. "Have you ever imagined that you weren't really alone?"

"Of course. We're never alone."

"Sometimes, it's like there's no one else out there. It's like I've lost my way in the world."

"Stop that." He urged.

"It's true. I'm not the same girl I was back in ECW."

"No one's the same. It's been four years."

"Less than that."

"Still..." She doesn't understand that life isn't an ice-cream social. It can be painful, and messy, and depressing. The softness in her eyes had turned rocky. "You have to know that you're loved."

"I understand."

Did she? I couldn't know. The leaves crunch beneath her boots.

"Everything is a gamble." She smiled. "Everything is a risk. But you know what?" Her fingers tightened against my overcoat's buttons. "It's all worth it."

"Yep." I said.

That was all I COULD say, before she kissed me.
